How To: Home

How To: Home turns home care into a cozy game. Browser and separate 3D prototypes explore chores, improvements, and making a place your own; both are paused for review.

At a glance

  • Who it helps: People who enjoy learning through a playful home-care world
  • The problem: Home maintenance can feel like a disconnected list of chores rather than a place to build understanding.
  • My role: Game creator and home-care learning designer.
  • Home care, upkeep, repairs, and personal style
  • Illustrated browser and separate Unreal 3D prototypes
  • Development paused for review

The story

A home asks you to learn a surprising number of things. There are ordinary chores, seasonal jobs, repairs, and all the choices that gradually make a place feel like yours. How To: Home explores that world as a cozy game, with the satisfaction of caring for a space and seeing it change.

The illustrated browser edition lets me experiment with that idea in a playful way. The work includes home-care activities, rewards, and choices about improvements and personal style. There is also a separate local three-dimensional prototype. They are different editions of the project, with different work behind them, rather than one finished game already available everywhere.

Both are paused for review. I’m keeping the ideas and prototypes while I work out the right next step. Part of the appeal is that this connects to my real-estate world from a different angle. Getting the keys is one moment; learning to look after a home is an ongoing experience. I want to see whether play can make that experience feel a little more inviting.
